I was raised in a modest home in Anaheim, California. This was a new housing-track developed for the Baby-Boomer generation in the 1950’s, and each of these homes was situated on a one-half acre lot with an attached garage. My dad, who liked to refer to himself as an amateur carpenter, packed this garage with tools, which enabled him to design and build furniture for our family as well as the construction of many patios and minor remodeling projects for the neighbors.
At a very young age I became interested in carpentry and masonry. Dad and I would spend countless hours in the backyard constructing a structure of some sort, or laying bricks around planters surrounding our large orange tree. But it was our garage where dad introduced me to table and circular saws, routers, and even a lathe. There were also many, many hand tools all neatly placed on their specifically outlined spot on the pegboard wall above the workbench. This was a great environment to nurture a young mind’s creativity, to learn respect, and understand the importance of organization and discipline.
